Newborns often startle and jump while sleeping, parents don’t need to worry. The reason is here.

Thetubekids.com – Elisa mom has a close friend who welcomed a little princess a month ago. When the little princess turned one month old, Elisa mom brought her family to congratulate the friend. The friend was very happy, and when talking about the little princess, her face was filled with happiness. I noticed that the friend held the little princess in her arms the entire time, not letting go even when the baby fell asleep. I found it a bit strange and, after asking, the response left Elisa mom amused.

The friend mentioned that sometimes, when the little princess is asleep, she would cry or startle for no apparent reason. She might twist her body restlessly, or suddenly open her hands, seeking comfort. The friend believed that the little princess, being newly born, lacked a sense of security outside the womb. This led to her feeling uneasy and having nightmares, causing her to cry in her sleep. To help the baby sleep more soundly, the friend often held her, using a mother’s love to dispel the little princess’s anxiety.

At Elisa mom’s home, both the older and younger siblings didn’t sleep soundly right after birth. The older one sometimes woke up because of sudden movements in his legs. However, these are all normal occurrences, and parents don’t need to worry.

The Reasons for a Newborn’s Restless Sleep

The sleep pattern of a newborn is quite different from that of an adult. Adults generally go directly into deep sleep, while a newborn’s sleep is typically divided into two stages: light sleep and deep sleep, each occupying half of the total sleep time. We often observe newborns smiling, puckering their lips, frowning, sucking, stretching their arms, moving their legs, and occasionally making humming sounds—these are signs that the newborn is in the light sleep phase.

For newborns under three months old, a sleep cycle lasts about 45 minutes, with the light sleep phase lasting approximately 20 minutes. This light sleep stage is crucial for the development of the newborn’s brain. During light sleep, the newborn processes and stores information about what they’ve seen and heard during the day, aiding in brain development. Newborns in the light sleep phase may occasionally dream, providing additional stimulation for brain development. Therefore, if a newborn doesn’t sleep soundly, parents don’t need to worry excessively. It’s advisable not to intervene immediately when the baby makes movements, as this may disrupt their sleep.

If a newborn has strong startle reflexes, like some babies who wake themselves up, parents can follow the example of Elisa mom and use swaddling blankets or sleeping bags to wrap the baby up.

If a newborn is not sleeping soundly, avoid constantly holding them in your arms, as this can lead to the baby becoming accustomed to it. Later on, when you try to let go, the baby may cry incessantly. Moreover, this practice is not conducive to establishing the baby’s sense of security.
